What to do and what not to do after your dental implant procedure

Tooth loss is very common, and most people will lose at least one natural tooth during their lifetime. Whether one or more of your teeth fell out of their own accord, or you have had an extraction, gaps in your smile can have a significant effect on the way you look and how you use your teeth. Dental implants have the ability to completely transform both the appearance and functionality of your teeth, restoring your smile to its former glory.

Dental implant procedures may be simple or complicated depending on your specific circumstances. Regardless of how straightforward your surgery is, the aftercare will remain the same and is essential if you are to make a swift recovery and minimize your risk of post-operative complications.

Here’s what you need to know about what to do and what not to do after your dental implant procedure.

DO

Arrange for someone to drive you home. The effects of your anesthetic can impair your judgment a little, and if you have been sedated, the medication will remain in your system for a number of hours after your appointment. You shouldn’t drive for at least 24 hours after your procedure.

Stock up on pain medication. You will be in some discomfort in the days after your implants are placed. Over the counter pain relief is usually enough to keep this discomfort at a manageable level but stock up before your appointment so that you don’t have to worry about obtaining the medication.

Stick to soft foods during the days after your surgery. Your mouth will be swollen and sore, so a soft food diet is recommended. It will also prevent any damage to your wound. Think soups, smoothies, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and ice cream until the initial phase of healing is complete.

Take your antibiotics as prescribed. Antibiotics will help prevent an infection from developing. It is important that you take them as per the instructions and that you finish the course.

Brush your teeth carefully. The plaque will continue to form on your teeth, so it is important that you continue to brush your teeth and take care of your oral health. Your dentist will be able to advise you of the best way to do this while your mouth heals.

DON'T

Worry about swelling. It is completely normal for your mouth and face to feel puffy for a few days following surgery. You can use ice packs held against the side of your face to help minimize inflammation. Sleep with your head elevated too.

Dislodge the blood clots that form. Blood clots are important for preventing persistent bleeding, and it is important that you don’t poke and dislodge them. You should also avoid drinking through a straw as the vacuum it creates inside your mouth can cause blood clots to come loose.

Blow your nose. Blowing your nose should be avoided for up to 2 weeks following your implant surgery as the pressure can dislodge blood clots. Use decongestant medications if you need to.

Hesitate to contact your implant provider if you need to. Most dental implant surgeries are completely successful, but if you experience any complications or you have any questions or concerns about your recovery, don’t hesitate to contact your implant provider for advice and support.

Smoke! You should not smoke under any circumstances. Smoking restricts the amount of oxygen in the blood, slowing down the rate of healing. It has also been shown to increase a patient’s risk of complications. You should give up altogether if you can. Smoking is proven to increase your risk of developing gum diseases, which could put your dental implants at risk in the future.
